Respectfully Yours
Troy Henriksen about Respectfully Yours :
“In this series of paintings I will be paying hommage and examining the great paintings of the past and the artist who made them. I am choosing paintings that I have always loved and admired. For example… Matisse with his declining nudes, fig leaf and fish bowl that he painted right here. Velasquez and the painting « Venus » birth of beauty and precept to all knowlegde, without it we are nothing. Michel Angelo and the Prophete Jeremie contemplating the end of the world, could be next week. Basquiat the king of brut waging war with every painting, and winning. Vincent Van Gogh and his « Post Man » who passionatly delivered everyone of the hundreds of letters he wrote to his brother Theo, who lived next door to the Galerie W. Picasso and the Cadillac he drove and all the woman he loved. Jackson Pollock and the big beautiful mess he made changing art history forever. Just to name a few. As a self taught painter my art education only increases as my love for art deepens.”
Ring of Fire – Respectfully Henri Matisse / La Musique / 1939
Painting on loan to Museum d’Orsay as a replacement for the painting « L’Origine du Monde », painted by Gustave Courbet. Date of hanging November 7 2010.
“It took hundreds of years for the sex of a woman to become socially acceptable, in part due to the cultural event of the painting and public hanging of the « Origine du Monde ». Today one does not have to look far to see a photogragh of a vagina which does not leave much for mystery, but it is in the « painting » itself that the mystery still resides. Like Gustave let it be said of me; I have always lived for freedom. I belonged to no Church, to no school, to no institution, to no academy, least of all to any regime except the regime of liberty.”
