Concevant la photographie comme un mode d’expression de son engagement personnel dans la société qui l’entoure, Iris Della Roca propose une série de clichés qui place son art au coeur de l’actualité, sans artifice mais avec justesse et poésie.

Passionnée par le Brésil, cette jeune femme de 25 ans vit la moitié de l’année dans une favela. Elle y travaille bénévolement pour l’association « Troque une arme contre un pinceau ». Une immersion au cours de laquelle l’artiste propose aux enfants de ces quartiers de créer avec eux un magazine.

Le titre de l’exposition « Puisque le roi n’est pas humble, que l’humble soit roi ! » donne le ton.

S’évadant le temps d’un dessin, d’un collage, ou d’une prise de vue, les enfants de Rocinha, la plus grande des favelas de Rio de Janeiro, retrouvent, sous la houlette d’Iris, la candeur et la fantaisie, laissant libre cours à leur imagination et s’improvisant mannequins de mode d’un jour… Une image des quartiers défavorisés très éloignée de celle que le monde entier voit chaque jour dans les médias.

« Avec le jeu de rôle, je voulais qu’ils s’amusent, se désinhibent et que ce soit pour eux une évasion, une libération. Que tous les problèmes qu’ils ont et qu’ils rencontrent dans leur quotidien ne viennent pas gâcher la joie de jouer. Mais à travers le jeu il s’agit surtout d’une prise de pouvoir sur leur condition et de changer, le temps de la photo, la société dans laquelle ils vivent. »

Une exposition à la fois touchante et optimiste qui propose aux visiteurs de plonger quelques instants dans un quotidien transcendé des enfants de Rio à travers photos, collages et dessins, sur un fond sonore enregistré par l’artiste dans les ruelles de Rocinha.

La Vallée Village éditera avec les photos d’Iris Della Roca le magazine qu’elle projetait de réaliser avec les enfants. Il contiendra les travaux préalables des enfants, les photos, ainsi que des articles de contributeurs issus du monde de la mode et de la photo. Il sera vendu (2 €) à l’Espace d’Accueil du Village et à l’Espace La Vallée Village pendant la durée de l’exposition. La totalité du montant de la vente sera versée à l’association « Troque une arme contre un pinceau ».

Perceiving photography as an expression of her personal engagement in the community, the 25-year-old Iris Della Roca is showcasing a series of photographic prints, which position her work in the heart of current affairs in an optimistic and poetic light. The exhibition title ‘As the king is not humble, may the humble be king!’ sets the tone.

Passionate about Brazil, Iris Della Roca lives half of the year in a Rio de Janeiro favela, where she works as an unpaid volunteer with the ‘Swap a weapon for a paintbrush’ charity. During her time in the favela, she offered the children a chance to produce a magazine together.

Through Iris’ photographic lens, the children from Rocinha, the biggest favela in Rio, were able to escape their circumstances for a moment and enter a world of innocence and makebelieve, enabling their imagination to run wild as they dreamt of becoming fashion models for a day… A far cry from the common perception, often depicted in the world’s press, of children’s experiences in the favelas.

“I wanted them, through role play, to have fun… to cast away their inhibitions and escape, feel free. That all the problems they have, and encounter, on a daily basis would not spoil the fun of playing. When they play and have fun, they take control of their condition and change, for the duration of the photo shoot, the society in which they live.”

This is an optimistic and moving exhibition, which offers visitors a glimpse into the children’s daily lives through a series of photos, collages and drawings, with the accompanying sounds of Rocinha’s streets recorded by the artist herself.

In addition to the exhibition, La Vallée Village will also be producing the magazine Iris Della Roca projected to create with the children from Rocinha. It will feature the children’s drafts and photos, as well as articles from contributors in the worlds of fashion and photography. The magazine will be sold (€2) at the Welcome Center in La Vallée Village and at Espace La Vallée Village as well during the exhibition. All magazine sales will be donated in full to the ‘Swap a weapon for a paintbrush’ charity.

Iris Della Roca

Iris Della Roca a 25 ans. Diplômée d’histoire et ancienne étudiante du Centre IRIS, elle débute son parcours professionnel à New-York pour le magazine Trace et travaille ensuite pour Amnesty International comme stagiaire. La jeune photographe fait ses premières armes auprès de photographes internationaux en France et au Brésil où elle décide de s’installer pendant un an pour développer deux projets en parallèle. Le premier consacré à la boxe comme moyen de sortir de la criminalité avec l’association Luta pela Paz (Lutte pour la Paix) et le second avec les enfants de la favela dans laquelle elle vit à leurs côtés.

Iris Della Roca is 25 years old. With a degree in history and a former student from Centre IRIS, she began her career in New York where she worked for Trace magazine before joining Amnesty International as an intern. Iris began to work with international photographers in France and Brazil when she decided to live in Brazil for a year and work on two projects. The first project is dedicated to boxing as a means of avoiding crime for the charity ‘Luta pela Paz’ (‘Fight for Peace’); the second project concerns children from the favela in which she lives.
